Battletech

So I used to play this on a weekly basis with Zed and a few others when I lived in Omaha. I look at the system now and think "how in the world did I play that without getting bored sooner?". The gameplay is soooo slow. Fun overall, but it takes patience. Especially when you had battalion level (36 vs 36) fighting like we did.

Anyone else play this? Especially in the early to mid 90s?

Fool, I still play this it's just that now i've graduated to buying semi-decent Dark Age plastic mechs from WizKids for about 15-25 cents a pop on eBay and in bulk. I've got some mechs I plan on hacking up for their parts to arm my Thor with. I'm also in love with the new Atlas design..

So; do you got MegaMek? :)

Played MegaMek a lot back in the day. Not so much now. I'm spending my PC time on Counterstrike Source.

It's been rebuilt on the Half Life 2 engine and uses ragdoll physics. You can track damage at the end of each round and see "injury locations" as they get hit. It's downright beautiful now. Still the best FPS game out there IMO.

Speaking of Battletech, it's releasing a new version. $100 buys you the two volume rules set.

Wait, I'm confused. Didn't the rise of omnimechs mean that customization became common as dirt?

And what about the custom design rules that have been around forever? I didn't know any Btech players that didn't have their own binder full of "improved" killer mechs based loosely on the official ones.

The Tactical manual had campaign rules, and that was late in the life of the classic system... not to mention everything that was in Mechwarrior.

BUT

I guess we shouldn't be critical of their marketing-speak. At least the game still lives.

But wake me up when they do away with hit point style armor and introduce all or nothing penetration.
